Kentucky's move from Circuit Court Clerks to Driver Licensing Regional Offices
If you last got a Kentucky license years ago, you may remember doing it at your county's Circuit Court Clerk office. That's changed: Kentucky rolled out new Driver Licensing Regional Offices (DLROs) county by county starting in March 2021, finishing the last counties in June 2022. DLROs now handle licensing statewide, alongside online scheduling, the choice between 4- and 8-year terms, and expanded online and mail renewal for eligible drivers. Written and road testing still runs through Kentucky State Police, separate from the DLRO system.
Kentucky REAL ID
A REAL ID Kentucky license carries the familiar gold star and is required for domestic flights from May 7, 2025 onward. It costs a bit more than the standard card, $24 for 4 years or $48 for 8, and requires an in-person DLRO visit with proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two Kentucky address documents.
