- EXP: Expiration date. South Dakota driver's licenses are valid for 5 years for most adult drivers and expire on your birthday.
ISS, not DOB, is what a form means when it asks for your "driver's license issue date." The two fields sit close together on the card, so it's worth double-checking which one you're copying.
What does DD mean on a South Dakota driver's license?
DD, or Document Discriminator, identifies the specific card, not the license holder, and gets a fresh number every time a new card is printed. Your license number stays constant across renewals; the DD does not. Banks and identity-verification systems use it to confirm a card hasn't been faked or altered.
A form's "document number" field, when separate from your license number, is usually asking for this.
Restrictions on a South Dakota driver's license
South Dakota DPS lists any driving restrictions in the field on the front of the card. If it shows None, your license has no restrictions. DPS does not publish a single short list of restriction letter codes for standard non-commercial licenses the way some states do. Instead, restrictions are printed in plain language on the card itself, such as a requirement for corrective lenses or a daylight-only limitation, and CDL holders have a separate, longer restriction code system for commercial equipment. South Dakota REAL ID: the gold star
South Dakota offers both standard and REAL ID-compliant licenses. A REAL ID South Dakota license has a gold star in the upper right corner. From May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or another accepted federal document is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. To get a REAL ID, visit a South Dakota driver licensing office in person with proof of identity, Social Security number, and two documents showing your South Dakota address.
A standard South Dakota license without the star still works for driving and most everyday ID, just not for domestic air travel.
How to renew a South Dakota driver's license
Most South Dakota drivers can renew online through the South Dakota DPS if their information hasn't changed and they don't need a REAL ID for the first time. In-person renewal is required for first-time REAL ID issuance, updated photos, and CDL transactions.
